The recent draft for the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) took place in Ottawa, marking a significant moment for aspiring players. Among the notable selections was Finnish forward Michelle Karvinen, who was chosen as the first overall pick by the Vancouver team.

Karvinen’s Impressive Career

Michelle Karvinen made headlines by being selected seventh overall, becoming Vancouver’s first draft pick. At 35 years old, she boasts an impressive record, having recently won a championship title with Frölunda HC in the Swedish women’s ice hockey league. She expressed her excitement about the opportunity to join Vancouver, recognizing the competitive nature of women’s hockey and the limited opportunities available.

Finnish Talent in the Draft

Another notable pick was goaltender Sanni Ahola, who was drafted by the Ottawa Charge as the fifth pick in the fifth round. The 25-year-old brings experience from her time playing in the NCAA for St. Cloud State University. Ahola will join her compatriot Ronja Savolainen, who was selected the previous year, on the Ottawa roster. Another Finnish player, Meeri Räisänen, also registered but wasn’t selected.

Highlights from the Draft

The draft featured other prominent selections, including Czech forward Kristýna Kaltounková, chosen first overall by the New York Sirens. The Boston Fleet followed with American defenseman Haley Winn, while the Sirens picked forward Casey O’Brien with a choice acquired from Toronto.
