Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of Formula 1, has indicated that Italy’s chance to host multiple Grand Prix events may soon be restricted, potentially resulting in just one race each year. This possibility arises from increased interest from various nations aiming to secure a spot on the expanding Formula 1 calendar.

Imola and Monza Dynamics

Domenicali highlighted the likelihood that both the Italian Grand Prix at Monza and the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola may not both last on the schedule. He acknowledged Italy’s historical significance in the sport but emphasized that the growing global appetite for Formula 1 would necessitate adjustments. While Monza has secured its place through 2031, Imola’s current contract concludes at the end of 2025, leaving its future uncertain.

Global Expansion of Formula 1

For the 2025 season, Formula 1 aims to accommodate a record 24 races, highlighting the competition for slots on the calendar. Notably, Madrid is set to join as a new venue in 2026, while locations in Thailand and parts of Africa are also seeking to host races. This influx of interest raises critical questions about the sustainability of existing events, especially those in Italy, which may be subject to rotation or removal.

Future Challenges

Domenicali outlined the challenges of making choices that could significantly impact long-standing races. He noted how Imola has shown resilience, particularly during the pandemic when venues were adapted. However, with the burgeoning interest in Formula 1 internationally, difficult decisions will need to be made regarding which races take precedence in the evolving landscape of the sport.
