General Motors Joins Formula 1
General Motors Commits to F1
General Motors (GM) has taken a significant step towards competing in Formula 1, with plans to provide power units starting in the 2029 season. This announcement follows the FIA’s recent approval of GM’s Cadillac brand to launch a Formula 1 team in 2026, marking a noteworthy entry for an American manufacturer in the prestigious racing series.
Collaboration with Ferrari
In preparation for its debut, GM will initially utilize engines supplied by Ferrari over the first three seasons. This collaboration allows adequate time for GM to develop and homologate its own engine that complies with forthcoming regulations, ensuring competitiveness when it enters the grid in 2029.
FIA’s Support for Expansion
The FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, has expressed enthusiasm regarding GM’s involvement in Formula 1. He stated that GM’s status as an approved power unit supplier signifies a positive direction in the global expansion of the sport. This move is in line with the FIA’s objectives to promote innovation and inclusivity among leading automotive brands.
Development Facilities and Plans
Russ O’Blenes, CEO of GM Performance Power Units LLC, oversees the development of the new engine. A dedicated facility will be established near GM’s Technical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is expected to commence operations next year. Development activities for the new power unit will start in 2027, reflecting GM’s commitment to advancing technology in racing.
Future Considerations for Engine Regulations
As GM prepares to enter the sport, discussions about future engine regulations are ongoing. While there are suggestions about potentially reintroducing naturally aspirated V10 engines, the current hybrid setup will continue to be the standard until at least 2030, ensuring consistency for all participating teams.
Outlook for GM in F1
GM’s forthcoming participation in Formula 1 signals a promising chapter in its motorsport journey, contributing to the competitive landscape alongside established manufacturers. The anticipated introduction of its own power unit and the operational capabilities of the Cadillac team are poised to enhance the dynamics of Formula 1 racing.
