Leadership Shift in FIA

The FIA is experiencing a shift in leadership following the recent resignation of Robert Reid. In response, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has nominated Malcolm Wilson to fill the deputy president for sport position. Reid’s resignation was a result of what he described as a significant breakdown in governance standards within the FIA. The nomination is set to be voted on during the General Assembly in Macau scheduled for June 2025.

Malcolm Wilson’s Accomplishments

Malcolm Wilson has a strong background in rally racing as the managing director of M-Sport, which has been integral to Ford’s rally program since 1997. Under his leadership, M-Sport has achieved several World Rally Championship titles. Additionally, Wilson is noted for his victory in the British Rally Championship in 1994, solidifying his reputation in the motorsport industry.

Endorsement from President Ben Sulayem

President Ben Sulayem has expressed confidence in Wilson’s extensive experience, highlighting his potential contributions to both the FIA and its member clubs. He underscored Wilson’s ability to enhance grassroots and professional motorsport, viewing this as a notable asset for the organization.

Expressing his gratitude for the nomination, Wilson reaffirmed his dedication to the FIA’s objectives. He aims to connect with a broader audience while improving competitive opportunities for all involved in motorsport.

Current Governance Issues

This nomination comes at a critical time as governance issues persist within the FIA. Prominent voices, like David Richards of Motorsport UK, have raised alarms about the need for greater transparency and accountability within the organization. Reid’s exit has highlighted the challenges of effective governance and decision-making processes in the FIA.

Richards has faced exclusion from key meetings due to his criticisms of specific confidentiality agreements, which he argues impede transparency and hinder the FIA’s credibility.
